Dr Joel Hoffman

Principal Clinical Psychologist

I hope people leave my therapy room a little closer to the person they want to be. That’s what makes a therapy room special, getting to talk and focus on the things that make life worth living.

Living in the Illawarra has shaped the way I think about wellbeing. When it feels helpful, I enjoy incorporating nature into therapy—sometimes that simply means slowing down together, and sometimes it means taking our conversation outside.

My approach

One of the first questions I’ll ask is:

“What do you want to get out of this?”

Your answer becomes the starting point for our work together.

I draw on therapies such as ACT, CBT and Schema Therapy, but the therapy itself is shaped by the person sitting in front of me rather than by a single model.

Areas I enjoy working with

I often work with adults and adolescents experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, addiction, relationship difficulties and major life transitions.

If what you're looking for isn't listed here, please feel free to get in touch. Therapy is about people, not categories.

Outside the therapy room

Outside work I'm usually spending time with my family, exploring the bush tracks around the Illawarra or playing mandolin with a local folk band.
